Why You Should Be Using Tallow Lotion for Your Skin
If you’re looking to ditch the store-bought lotions and use a more natural and chemical-free way to nourish your skin, whipped tallow lotion might be your new skincare essential. Rich in vitamins, anti-inflammatory properties, and skin-repairing nutrients, tallow has been used for centuries to protect and hydrate the skin naturally.
In this post, I’ll walk you through how to make a luxurious whipped tallow lotion with shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, aloe vera, vitamin E, and essential oils. Plus, we’ll dive into the skin benefits of tallow.
What Is Tallow, and Why Is It Amazing for Skin?
Tallow is rendered beef fat from grass-fed cows, packed with skin-loving nutrients. It closely mimics our skin’s natural oils, making it a perfect non-greasy, deeply moisturizing lotion.
Key Benefits of Tallow for Skin:
✔ Deep Hydration: Absorbs quickly without clogging pores.
✔ Rich in Fat-Soluble Vitamins (A, D, E, K): Supports skin repair and elasticity.
✔ Anti-Inflammatory: Soothes eczema, psoriasis, and dry skin.
✔ Long-Lasting Moisture: Unlike water-based lotions, tallow locks in hydration.
DIY Whipped Tallow Lotion Recipe
Ingredients:
- 10 oz. tallow (buy grass-fed, rendered, and strained. This will ensure your tallow doesn’t have a funky smell. Try buying from a local ranch if you can!)
- 2 oz. shea butter (softens and deeply moisturizes)
- 1 oz. coconut oil (antibacterial and nourishing) I use fractionated coconut oil but you can use any kind.
- 1 oz. jojoba oil (balances natural skin oils)
- 1 oz. argan oil (anti-aging and deeply hydrating)
- 1 oz. aloe vera gel (soothes and hydrates)
- 1 tsp vitamin E oil (preservative and antioxidant)
- 15 drops frankincense essential oil (anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating)
- 8 drops lavender essential oil (calming and skin-soothing)
I won’t provide a link for essential oils because I don’t know much about oils yet. I buy doTERRA and Young Living oils because I live in Utah (LOL) but I don’t know much about the quality of other brands. I’ve purchased NOW essential oils before and I’ve been happy with them. There’s a new brand called Revive Essential Oils that I also want to try. So, I leave it up to you!
Instructions:
1. Melt the Tallow & Shea Butter
In a double boiler (or a heat-safe bowl over simmering water), melt the tallow and shea butter on low heat until fully liquefied.
2. Add the Oils
Remove from heat and stir in the coconut oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, and vitamin E. Mix well.
3. Cool & Whip
Let the mixture cool until it becomes semi-solid (about 30–45 minutes in the fridge). It should be firm but not completely hard.
4. Whip It
Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the mixture for 5–7 minutes until light and fluffy.
5. Add Aloe Vera & Essential Oils
Gently fold in the aloe vera gel, frankincense, and lavender essential oils. Whip again until fully incorporated.
6. Store & Use
Transfer to a clean glass jar. Store at room temperature or in a cool, dark place. Apply as needed to dry skin.
